Hip stretches for skaters
If hip stretches had spice levels like Nando’s 😅🥵🌶️ Most people have tight hips, and skateboarders are no exception.
Luckily there are plenty of poses to stretch those hips, from mild to extra hot 🌶️:
1️⃣ Reclined butterfly - soles of the feet together, let your knees open to the sides (option to have support under your knees if the stretch is too intense)
2️⃣ Reclined figure four - place your right ankle below your left knee, flex both feet, think about moving the right knee away from you. Option to float the left knee up and grab ahold of the left hamstring or shin (do both sides)
🌶️ Adding some mild spice:
3️⃣ Child’s pose with knees wide - feet together, knees as wide as your mat, sit your bum on your heels and extend the arms forward, relaxing the forehead onto the mat. Option to have a blanket/cushion under your bum if it doesn’t reach your heels.
4️⃣ Low lunge - tuck the toes of the back foot and slightly tuck the pelvis under to stretch the hip flexor of your back leg (do both sides)
🌶️🌶️ Spicing it up even more:
5️⃣ High lunge - press into the back toes and lift your back knee off the floor. Bend the back knee as much as you need to keep the same position in the pelvis and stretch in the hip flexor (do both sides)
6️⃣ Yogi squat - heels can be lifted or on the ground. Bum low, chest proud, feet slightly out and knees in line with your toes.
7️⃣ Skandasana (side squat) - one leg is in squat while the other extends. Flex the toes of the extended leg and point the knee of the extended leg to the ceiling (do both sides).
🌶️🌶️🌶️ Extra spicy (remember to take your time and breathe!):
8️⃣ Pigeon - one shin (somewhat) parallel to the front of the mat, the other leg extends behind you. Stay lifted or fold over the front leg (do both sides)
9️⃣ Double pigeon - flex both feet, place one shin on top of the other (do both sides)
🔟 Gomukasana legs - place one knee on top of the other, flex both feet (do both sides)
🔥 Boss level:
Frog pose - think 90° angles between your thighs and torso, and thighs and shins. Option to place blankets/cushions under knees for more comfort.
